Walking into your first BJJ class in Ruston can feel like a lot — new people, new words, a mat you've never stood on. It's normal to be nervous, and it's also normal to love it by the end. Here's exactly what to expect at your first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class at Triad Martial Arts Academy of Ruston, from the door to the end of class.
What should I wear to my first BJJ class in Ruston?
For a gi class, a white or blue gi is what you'll need — and if you don't have one yet, that's completely fine for your first visit. For no-gi, athletic wear like a rashguard and board shorts works. Avoid anything with zippers, pockets, or metal that could scratch someone on the mat. We'll help you get sized and set up at your free trial, so you don't need to have it all figured out before you walk in.
What happens when you arrive
Show up a few minutes early. You'll meet the instructor, sign a quick waiver, and get a tour of the academy — the mat area, where to put your shoes, and where to change. If you're new, we'll point you toward our Adult Beginner BJJ class on Monday at 5:45 PM, which is built specifically for first-timers and moves at a comfortable pace.
In Ruston, our classes open with a guided warm-up — some light movement, mobility work, and drills to get your body ready. You won't be asked to do anything extreme. The warm-up is there to prevent injury and get you moving, not to test you.
What does the actual class look like?
After the warm-up, the instructor teaches a technique — usually a position or a submission, broken down step by step. You'll pair up and drill it slowly, repeating the movement until it starts to feel natural. The instructor and more experienced students will help you along the way; nobody expects you to get it perfect on the first rep.
Toward the end of class, there's usually some positional sparring or live rolling. As a beginner, you'll start in controlled positions — often from a specific spot — so you're never thrown into a full live roll on day one. You can sit out any round you want. There's no pressure to do more than you're comfortable with.
What if I'm completely out of shape?
You don't need to be in shape to start — that's what training is for. BJJ meets you where you are. Plenty of people start BJJ in Ruston having never done a martial art, and they get fit on the mat over time. The beginner class is paced so you can build fitness and technique together without being overwhelmed.
What should I do after class?
Talk to the instructor. Ask questions about anything that felt confusing. We'll walk you through membership options and help you pick a schedule that fits your life — there's no hard sell. You can read more about our adult BJJ program first, or just book your free class and see it for yourself. Call or text us at (318) 513-3828 with any questions.
