Kids Jiu-Jitsu in Ruston: Why Parents Choose Triad
Confidence, discipline, and a family-safe culture — here's what makes our kids program different.

Parents looking into kids jiu-jitsu in Ruston usually want the same things: a program that actually teaches, coaches who care about their kid, and a culture that's safe and positive. That's what we've built at Triad Martial Arts Academy of Ruston. Here's why families choose our kids program — and what your child's first class looks like.
What ages do you teach in kids jiu-jitsu?
Our kids program starts at age 4. Little Kids Gi BJJ is for ages 4-7 and runs Monday and Thursday at 4:45 PM. Big Kids Gi BJJ is for ages 8-15 and runs Monday and Thursday at 5:30 PM. We also run a Kids No-Gi BJJ class on Tuesday at 5:30 PM, a Kids Competition Class on Wednesday at 5:15 PM, and a Homeschool Gi Class on Tuesday and Thursday at 2:00 PM. Splitting by age means every child gets coaching that fits where they are developmentally.
Who teaches the kids classes?
The Big Kids class is led by Makayla Lee — a BJJ purple belt under Daniel O'Brien, a Judo green belt, with a B.S. in Kinesiology and a high school teacher and coach since 2016. The Little Kids class is led by Kandace Landreneau, a BJJ purple belt and 2022 IBJJF Masters 1 World Champion. Your child is learning from coaches who teach for a living and compete at a high level.
Is it really family-safe?
Yes — and we mean it. Triad is a family-safe culture with no negative talk or cursing, on the mat and off. One of our members, Shane, put it this way: "They build relationships with my boys and teach them as if they are part of the school." That's the standard we hold ourselves to. Kids learn discipline and confidence in an environment that's genuinely positive, not one that's just called family-friendly.
What does a kids class look like?
Classes mix a fun warm-up, a technique of the day, games and drilling, and supervised live training — all paced for each age group. Younger kids focus on coordination, body awareness, and basic movements. Older kids add technique and positional sparring. It's structured so kids stay engaged and actually learn, not just burn energy.
What should my child wear?
A white or blue gi for gi classes, and athletic wear for no-gi. We'll help you get your child sized and set up at their free trial — their first class is free, so you can see if it's a fit before you commit to anything.
