A dedicated women's jiu-jitsu program in Ruston is rare — and it matters. At Triad Martial Arts Academy of Ruston, our women's-only BJJ classes are taught by female instructors, including an IBJJF World Champion, and the same coaches run annual women's self-defense courses with the Lincoln Parish Sheriff's Office. Here's what the program is and why women choose it.

What is the women's-only BJJ program?

It's a jiu-jitsu class for women, taught by women, with both gi and no-gi options. The women's class is led by Kandace Landreneau — a BJJ purple belt and 2022 IBJJF Masters 1 World Champion at blue belt in both her division and the absolute — alongside Coach Makayla Lee. You're learning from a world champion, in a room built for you.

Because the class is women-only, it removes a lot of the intimidation that can come with walking into a mixed martial arts room. It's welcoming to beginners, and we start you with the fundamentals at a comfortable pace. No experience is needed.

When are the women's classes?

Times aren't published online — call or text us at (318) 513-3828 for the current women's class schedule. We keep it flexible so we can find a time that works for the women actually training, and we'll get you on the mat at your free trial.

Do you offer women's self-defense?

Yes. Coaches Kandace and Makayla teach annual women's self-defense courses at the Lincoln Parish Sheriff's Office. That work is part of the same lineage — Triad Martial Arts was founded in 1996 in Cullman, Alabama by Johnny Lee Smith, who developed The Equalizer, a women's safety and self-defense program. The women's program here carries that forward.

Is it beginner-friendly?

Completely. Classes cover technique, drilling, and positional sparring in a supportive, female-led environment — built for beginners and experienced grapplers alike. You'll learn real jiu-jitsu, not a watered-down version, and you'll learn it from coaches who compete and teach at a high level.

What should I wear?

A white or blue gi for gi classes, and athletic wear like a rashguard and leggings for no-gi. We'll help you get set up at your free trial so you're comfortable from minute one.
